The important thing is that the library and application version numbers are the same otherwise, the system complains. Why would you be trying to update the package manually unless there was a problem with it, given the ease and convenience of using Synaptic? Gdebi also warns that installing packages manually from repositories other than Ubuntu's can be a security risk, and asks you for your password. In this case, you know that the official packages are broken, so the warning isn't very useful. Run on Ubuntu Jaunty, gdebi tells you that older versions of the Synfig packages are available from the official repository and that the official packages are recommended.

Gdebi downloads any additional packages required if they're available in the official Ubuntu repository.

This saves you a lot of boring searches and manual installations of standard packages. For those packages with additional dependencies that can be satisfied by the official Ubuntu repositories, gdebi takes care of the downloading and installation automatically (see Figure 5-13). Repeat the process for the other Synfig packages you download. When gdebi is up and running, click the Install Package button in the upper-right corner to proceed.
